The Global Privacy Assembly (GPA) Executive Committee and Secretariat are delighted to announce the launch of the Global Privacy Assembly 2020 Closed Session – At your desk. A unique event this year, the GPA will bring together the GPA members and observers online for the very first time. While we are unable to meet in person, you’ll engage in rich debate and high-level decision-making, from the comfort of your own home/office during bitesize sessions spread over three days:

  • Tuesday 13 October 2020
  • Wednesday 14 October 2020
  • Thursday 15 October 2020

This year, the Conference is hosted over three, three-hour online sessions from 11:00-14:00 (UK Time) for each session and will be held on the Microsoft Teams online platform, with a focus on the key priorities and core areas of business, enabling maximum participation during the scheduled week of the Conference.

The individual GPA Working Groups may organise their own webinar sessions separate to the main Conference and information on these will be available in due course.

Why you should join this event

Our work involving both Members and Observers in shaping the Global Privacy Assembly this past year has been defining, and in these exceptional times, in a fast-paced environment, the GPA has played a positive role, demonstrating pragmaticism and enabling the critical sharing of information amongst the membership.

Have your say and get the latest information on the work of the GPA 2019-2020, including:

  • Progress of the Global Privacy Assembly Strategic Direction with reports and debate on major questions of, for example:
    • global interoperability of data protection/privacy regulation and laws;
    • development of innovative regulatory cooperation approaches to the challenges of AI;
    • the data protection relationship to other rights and freedoms;
    • how to improve cooperation between member authorities in live investigations;
    • the intersections and promotion of regulatory co-operation between privacy, consumer protection and competition authorities; and
    • how to approach privacy/data protection in digital education/children’s privacy.
  • Interact with the GPA-dedicated Strategic Direction Sub-Committee and the GPA Working Groups delivering on the GPA Policy Strategy objectives 2019-2021, designed to support our membership;
  • The GPA’s impact in helping members to work with their governments to address the global COVID-19 pandemic and the role and contribution of the GPA COVID-19 Taskforce; and
  • Debate and influence the GPA’s core business, adoption of GPA Resolutions which remain our community’s common position on where our privacy regulatory community stands on global priorities in 2020 and the adoption of GPA forthcoming work to strengthen our common voice on such priorities.

Please note the following:

  1. This is a closed event; only participants who are a GPA Member or Observer may register.
  2. GPA Rules and Procedures apply to the Closed Session proceedings as usual. Practical adjustments will be made for the exceptional circumstances presented by an online conference.
  3. Once registered, you will be provided with additional information closer to the Conference including joining instructions, utilising the interpretation service, and voting during the Closed Session.
  4. The Closed Session will be minuted and recorded for Members’ and Observers’ access only after the event, kept for a period of 10 days.
    • If you do not want your image recorded, please join with your camera off.
    • If you join the meeting by dial-in facility (e.g. audio only) you will not have access to the materials displayed during the Conference, the Conference chat, or the interpretation facility. To access the interpretation facility you will require an Internet connection.

Event Overview

We look forward to welcoming you to the Global Privacy Assembly Closed Session – At Your Desk as an opportunity to come together to both debate and celebrate the considerable achievements and success of our community initiatives this year, and to collectively decide on the focus for the future work of the GPA community in 2020-2021.

Day 1, Tuesday 13 October

This session commences with the Conference Opening by the GPA Chair, Elizabeth Denham, the UK’s Information Commissioner to set the scene for what to expect in this unusual year. This will be followed by the accreditation of new Members and Observers and then moves directly into the GPA Strategic Direction Closed Session event.

This part of the session will be chaired by the GPA Strategic Direction Sub-Committee with a focus on the GPA’s three strategic priorities and key achievements over the year, including the progress, deliverables and mid-term outcomes of the 2019-2021 GPA Policy Strategy which have been developed in the GPA Working Groups:

GPA’s Three Strategic Priorities include:

  • Advancing global privacy in the digital age
  • Maximising the GPA’s voice and influence
  • Capacity building

Who should attend?

This session is open to All GPA Members and Observers and is not limited to Policy Strategy Working Group Members.

Interpretation is available in French and Spanish.

No voting on the GPA Policy Strategy is expected to take place in this session, but debate here will strongly influence the Resolution and Reports Adoption Session on 15/10/2020.

Day 2, Wednesday 14 October

This session is dedicated to GPA members’ and observers’ various views of the world in terms of regulating data protection and privacy in a post-COVID-19 environment. It will include highlights of Taskforce outputs from May to September 2020, and a presentation of the Taskforce’s significant deliverables in aiding the GPA community to deal with the significant privacy issues arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.

This session will include the delivery of a number of capacity building initiatives and the launch of a Compendium of Best Practices, which brings together authorities’ good practice initiatives in response to COVID-19.

Who should attend?

This session is open to All GPA Members and Observers and is not limited to COVID-19 Taskforce members.

Interpretation is available in French and Spanish.

No voting is expected to take place in this session, but debate here will strongly influence the Resolution and Reports Adoption Session on 15/10/2020.

Day 3, Thursday 15 October

This session is the GPA Core Business Session, including a focus on the following:

  • Adoption of Working Group Reports and Report of the Executive Committee
  • Executive Committee Elections
  • GPA Resolutions, discussion, and adoption
  • GPA Rules on GPA Voice
  • The new GPA Reference Panel
  • Statement of the Next Conference Host

Who should attend?

This session is open to all GPA Members and Observers and is recommended for Heads of Authority or designated deputies with delegated authority who will be expected to vote in the session on resolutions, reports and receive news of the outcomes of the GPA’s 2020 Executive Committee elections.
